GPTBot
ChatGPT's crawler for collecting training data. It is distinct from OAI-SearchBot, which builds the search index behind ChatGPT search, and ChatGPT-User, which fetches a page when a user asks for it.
GPTBot is the user agent ChatGPT's documentation lists for crawling pages that may be used to train its models. Its documentation lists the token to use in robots.txt and the IP ranges it crawls from, and it states that GPTBot respects disallow rules. Two other ChatGPT agents matter more for being found. OAI-SearchBot fetches pages for the index that ChatGPT search draws on; block it and your pages cannot appear as sources in searched answers. ChatGPT-User fetches a specific page when a person asks ChatGPT to open or summarise it, on that person's behalf. The three are controlled separately, so a store can, for example, decline training crawling while staying in search. Whichever choice you make, make it deliberately: a blanket rule copied from a blog post in 2023 often blocks OAI-SearchBot without meaning to. Check the live vendor page before editing, because the names and behaviours are documented by the vendor and have changed before. Verify the roles and published IP ranges in ChatGPT’s crawler documentation, checked 20 September 2026. Allowing a search crawler does not guarantee an answer citation.
