Answer engine optimization
Shaping pages so an engine that returns one answer, such as Google AI Overviews, Perplexity or ChatGPT with search, can lift the answer from them and name the source.
Updated
An answer engine gives one reply instead of ten links. Answer engine optimization, or AEO, is the craft of writing a page so that reply can be built from it: a question in the heading, a short direct answer in the first lines, then the detail and the evidence underneath.
For a store the habits are simple to state and harder to keep. Pick one buyer question per page. Answer it in plain language before you explain. Use headings that read as questions or claims. Keep every product fact true to the catalogue, and link the two to five products that genuinely answer the question. Featured snippets were the earliest form of this; AI Overviews and chat answers are the current one. The test has not changed: read the answer the engine gives today and ask whether your page could have produced it. The Shopify GEO workflow connects those editorial choices to a repeatable publishing and measurement process.
How AEO differs from SEO
SEO aims to rank a page in a list so a person clicks it. AEO aims to have the answer itself taken from your page, often with no click at all. The two share almost all of their foundations. A page an engine cannot crawl or index cannot be used as a source, and Google says a page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet to appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode.
What AEO adds is attention to shape. A page that buries its answer under three paragraphs of introduction can still rank; it is less likely to be quoted. AEO also changes what you count. Instead of a position, you record whether your brand or page appears in the answer, and you keep that separate from clicks and sales. The term overlaps heavily with generative engine optimization: AEO looks at the page and the question it answers, GEO at being retrieved and cited by a model that writes with sources.
How answer engines choose their sources
Most answer engines search before they answer, so the pages they cite tend to be pages that already rank. In Citelift's 25 September 2026 audit of Shopify SEO, AI blogging and AI-visibility competitors, using DataForSEO search and AI-mention data, each competitor's most-cited pages in Google AI Overviews were informational pages that also ranked in search, such as broad explainers, while buying pages barely registered. On Shopify buying questions such as "best Shopify SEO app", apps.shopify.com ranked first and made up three or four of roughly seven AI Overview references. YouTube was one of the two most-cited domains in every topic we looked at. These are observations from one audit of one group of competitors on one date, not a rule every engine follows.
The practical reading for a store: earn the ranking, answer the question plainly, and expect engines to lean on sources people already trust. Google states there are no additional requirements, special files or schema needed for its AI features (Google Search Central, AI features and your website, read 25 September 2026).
Questions.
Is AEO different from GEO?
Mostly in emphasis. AEO is about shaping a page so an engine can lift its answer; GEO is about being retrieved and cited by an assistant that writes with sources. The work on the page is largely the same.
Does AEO replace SEO?
No. Answer engines search before they answer, so a page that does not rank or is not indexed is rarely used as a source. AEO builds on SEO rather than replacing it.
How do I measure AEO?
Ask a fixed set of buyer questions without your brand name, in the engines you care about, on a schedule, and record whether your brand or page appears. Record a failed check as unavailable, not as zero.
