LLM SEO
LLM SEO is the work of making a site easy for large language models such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity to find, read and cite when they answer a question. It is mostly another name for generative engine optimization.
Updated
Someone asks ChatGPT which running shoe suits flat feet. With search on, it reads a handful of pages and writes a reply that names some brands and links some sources. LLM SEO is the work of being one of the pages it read and one of the brands it named.
The phrase is mostly a synonym. When we looked at Google's results for "llm seo" on 9 October 2026, the AI Overview at the top described it as another name for generative engine optimization. People searching it are asking the same thing as people searching GEO or AEO: what do I change so AI assistants mention my store? Most of it is search work done carefully, plus a way of measuring answers instead of rankings.
How LLM SEO differs from SEO, AEO and GEO
Classic SEO earns a place in a list of links and counts clicks. Answer engine optimization shapes a page so a surface that gives one answer can lift a passage from it. Generative engine optimization aims at assistants that read several pages and write a new answer with sources. LLM SEO covers the same ground as the last two, and the label usually tells you more about who wrote the article than about a different method.
The word "LLM" does add one useful question: is the model answering from training, or from pages it just fetched? That decides what a store can influence. The SEO vs AEO vs GEO guide sets the three side by side for an online shop.
What an LLM uses when it answers
Two sources, and they behave very differently. Training data is text the model learned from before a cutoff date. You can't edit it. Retrieval is what happens with search on: the assistant searches, fetches pages and writes with them in front of it, the pattern called retrieval-augmented generation. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode "may use a 'query fan-out' technique", running several related searches before answering (Google Search Central, AI features and your website, read 9 October 2026).
Vendors run separate crawlers for the two jobs. ChatGPT's crawler documentation says sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot "will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers", while GPTBot collects content "that may be used in training" (ChatGPT crawler documentation, read 9 October 2026). For a store, retrieval is where effort pays. A page fetched today can be quoted today.
What a store can actually change
Access comes first. If robots.txt or bot protection turns away the search crawlers you want, nothing else here matters; the AI crawlers and robots.txt guide goes agent by agent.
Then the pages. Answer one buyer question in the first lines, under a heading that reads like the question. Keep product facts identical on the product page, the blog, the structured data and any feed, because an assistant that finds two different materials for one item may quote the wrong one. Shopify's help centre asks merchants to "add detailed product specifications and technical details" (Shopify Help Center, Optimizing your store for AI, read 9 October 2026).
Slowest of all: mentions elsewhere. Assistants repeat what the wider web says, so reviews, press and community threads that name your store carry weight. You can earn those. Writing them yourself doesn't count.
How to measure it
There is no rank to report: answers shift with the wording, the engine and the day. The workable method is a fixed panel: buyer questions without your brand name, asked in the same engines on a schedule, with a dated record of who was named and which pages were cited. Log a failed check as unavailable, not zero. The AI visibility measurement guide covers the setup, and the free check asks ChatGPT three buyer questions in your category. Most products sold as LLM SEO tools are trackers of this kind; the AEO tools list compares them.
What LLM SEO cannot promise
It can't promise a mention. The engine picks its sources, and the same question can return different brands an hour apart. It can't put you into a model's training data on demand, or take you out. Special files won't do the work either: Google says "you don't need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup" to appear in its AI features. Treat a promise of citations as a warning sign, and any single answer as one sample.
Questions.
What is LLM SEO?
Making your pages easy for AI assistants to find, read and cite when they answer. In practice it is another name for generative engine optimization.
Is LLM SEO different from GEO or AEO?
Not in a way that changes the work. The tasks are the same: crawl access, clear answers near the top of the page, consistent product facts and a dated record of what assistants say.
Do I need an LLM SEO tool?
Not to start. A handful of questions run by hand in a spreadsheet will show where you stand. A tool earns its cost when you want them asked on a schedule across several engines.
Can I get my store into ChatGPT's training data?
Not on demand, and you couldn't check whether it happened. You can influence retrieval: whether the assistant's search crawler can fetch your pages, and whether they answer the question clearly.
