Best AEO tools for ecommerce, sorted by job

Answer engine optimization tools for online stores, sorted by job: tracking, content, Shopify schema, crawler access, free checks and publishing.

The best AEO tools depend on the job. To see whether AI answers mention you, start with Otterly.AI or Ahrefs Brand Radar. To make pages answerable, look at Frase or Surfer. For structured data on Shopify, Schema Plus or Ilana's JSON‑LD for SEO. Crawler access needs no tool: edit robots.txt, and know that Google requires no special AI files. For a free first look, use Ahrefs' checker or Citelift's. To publish product-linked answers on a Shopify blog, Citelift. Picks rest on vendor pages checked 9 October 2026.

AEO tools compared by job

Answer engine optimization tools fall into six jobs. The table names one or more tools per job, with the entry price exactly as the vendor's page showed it on 9 October 2026. We have not bought or run these tools; the engines and platforms are the ones each vendor names.

Job 1: see whether AI answers mention or cite you

This is the job most "AEO tool" lists are really about. A tracker asks a fixed set of questions in chosen engines on a schedule, then records whether your brand is named, whether your pages are cited and who appears instead.

Otterly.AI is the cheapest monthly-billed tracker we found, and Ahrefs Brand Radar is worth checking first if you already pay for Ahrefs, because paid plans include a few daily prompts. The AI visibility tools comparison covers ten trackers, including Peec AI, Profound, Semrush, SE Ranking, LLMrefs, Rankscale and Scrunch, with prices, allowances and a buying checklist.

Read the unit before the price. Some vendors sell prompts refreshed daily, some weekly, and some sell checks or credits that run out faster on more engines. A tracker measures. It does not change a single page, so budget for the work that follows.

Job 2: make pages answerable

An answer engine lifts a passage from a page that answers the question plainly near the top. Answer engine optimization is mostly that editorial habit: one buyer question per page, a short direct answer first, then the evidence.

Content tools help you hit that shape and check it against what ranks.

  • Frase scores drafts for SEO and GEO, bundles 50 AI Visibility prompts on Starter, and its Content Guard watches pages for decay and proposes a fix you approve. Its pricing page names WordPress, Webflow, Sanity, Wix and its own CMS as publishing destinations. Shopify is not named.
  • Surfer sells content plans and a separate AI Search Analytics plan that tracks 50 prompts daily, with a mention gap and brand sentiment view. Shopify appears on its page only as a customer name, not as an integration.
  • Writesonic combines prompt tracking with AI article writing. Its page says you can find the prompts that recommend competitors instead of you, "then fix it with AI agents". Its Action Center is a trial on Growth and full on Enterprise.

None of the three said it publishes straight to a Shopify blog on the pages we read, so plan to copy drafts across. For product pages, the free product description scorer reviews one description against ten editorial checks without using a model.

Job 3: structured data on Shopify

Structured data tells search engines in a fixed format what a page is: a product with a price and stock state, an article, an FAQ. On Shopify it usually comes from your theme, an app, or both.

  • Schema Plus ‑ AI & SEO JSON‑LD starts at $10.99 a month for up to 5 product and review schemas, with higher plans for more products, collections and FAQ markup. Its listing says it resolves Search Console errors from missing or incorrect schema and removes duplicate or conflicting markup. Rated 5.0 from 591 reviews when we checked.
  • Ilana's JSON‑LD for SEO (TM) lists Annual Pro at $399 a year. The listing says it covers products, reviews, blogs, breadcrumbs, FAQs and video, and updates itself when you change themes. Rated 4.9 from 442 reviews.

Be clear about what this buys. Google says you do not need special schema.org structured data to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode (Google Search Central, AI features and your website, checked 9 October 2026). Structured data still matters for rich results and for keeping product facts consistent and machine-readable. Check what your theme already outputs before adding an app, because two sources of Product markup can disagree. The Shopify structured data guide shows how to check.

Job 4: crawler access and llms.txt

Google's position is short. There are no extra requirements or special optimisations for AI Overviews or AI Mode, and you do not need new machine-readable files, AI text files or markup to appear in them. A page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet to be a supporting link. robots.txt rules for Googlebot are the crawl control, and nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex limit what is shown (Google Search Central, checked 9 October 2026).

So the first AEO task here is access, and it needs no paid tool. Make sure robots.txt and any bot protection let in the search crawlers you want. ChatGPT and Claude run separate agents for search and for training; Perplexity separates its search crawler from fetches made for a user. The AI crawler and robots.txt guide goes agent by agent, and the free robots.txt generator writes the rules.

llms.txt is a proposal, published at llmstxt.org, for a Markdown file at your site root that summarises the site and links its most useful pages. Version 2 also suggests clean .md copies of pages. Google says you do not need it for AI Overviews or AI Mode, and the crawler documentation we read does not mention it. Adding one is cheap; read llms.txt for Shopify for how Shopify serves it, and use the free llms.txt generator or LLMrefs' free one to draft it.

Several paid trackers include a crawler check: Peec AI's audit covers 40+ AI bots in your robots.txt, Semrush's toolkit audits for issues that block AI crawlers, and LLMrefs and Rankscale list crawlability checks. Useful, but a free robots.txt read answers the same first question.

Job 5: free checkers

A free checker asks a few questions once and shows whether you were named. Ahrefs' Free AI Visibility Checker needs no signup and covers five platforms. Citelift's free check needs no sign-in and asks ChatGPT three buyer questions for your category, then shows who was named and which sources were cited.

Our AI visibility tools roundup records what ChatGPT and Perplexity recommended on 9 October 2026 when asked for a free checker.

Use a free check to decide whether a paid panel is worth it. One miss on one day is a single observation. The free checkers section of the tracker guide compares the options.

Job 6: publish product-linked answers

The jobs above measure or prepare. Someone still has to write the pages that answer buyer questions with your own products in them. That is the job Citelift does.

Citelift plans buyer questions from your catalogue, writes product-linked articles, checks product facts against the catalogue, and publishes to your Shopify blog on the cadence your plan allows. It re-runs AI visibility checks monthly on Starter and weekly on Core and Growth, and reports them beside article-attributed orders. Plans start at $49 a month.

Know the limits. Citelift is new: listed on the Shopify App Store since 5 October 2026, with no merchant results we can show yet. Its checks go through search-backed model APIs, which can differ from what a shopper sees in the apps. It adds article and FAQ markup to its own posts, but it does not manage store-wide Product schema or crawler rules, and it does not track hundreds of prompts, so it sits beside the tools above rather than replacing them. If you have a writer, the same job can be done by hand.

What an AEO tool cannot do

  • Make an engine cite you. The engine picks its sources. A tool can measure answers or improve pages; it cannot promise a mention, a citation or a sale.
  • Fix a page that does not rank or is not indexed. Answer engines search before they answer, and Google requires a page to be indexed and snippet-eligible to be a supporting link.
  • Show you every answer a shopper saw. Answers vary by wording, engine, location and day. A tracker shows its own sample, under its own method.
  • Turn a mention into revenue on paper. A mention is not a click, and a click is not an order. Keep those as separate evidence; the attribution guide shows how.
  • Stay current. Every price and allowance here was read on 9 October 2026. Check the vendor's own page before you buy.

Questions.

What is an AEO tool?

Software that helps with one part of answer engine optimization: checking whether AI answers mention or cite you, shaping pages so an answer can be lifted from them, adding structured data, managing crawler access, or publishing answer pages. No single tool covers every part, so buy by the job you have.

Do I need a paid AEO tool?

Not to start. Ask a few buyer questions by hand or use a free checker, check that robots.txt lets the search crawlers in, and fix the pages that should answer those questions. A paid tool earns its cost when you want the same questions asked on a schedule, or a job done every week that you cannot staff.

Are AEO tools the same as AI visibility trackers?

No. A tracker is one kind of AEO tool: it measures whether answers name or cite you. Content tools, schema apps, crawler tools and publishing tools change what the engines can read. Many vendors now bundle a small tracker with a content product, so read which job the plan actually covers.

Does my store need llms.txt for AEO?

It is optional. llms.txt is a proposal published at llmstxt.org. Google says you do not need AI text files, new machine-readable files or special markup to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. It is cheap to add, so treat it as a courtesy, not a lever.
