Best AI Overview trackers, compared

Ten AI Overview trackers compared on what they record in Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, entry price and trial, plus a free way to track AI Overviews by hand.

The best AI Overview tracker depends on how you already work. If you track keywords, SE Ranking, Semrush or Advanced Web Ranking add AI Overview presence and citations to rank tracking. If you track prompts, try Otterly.AI or Ahrefs Brand Radar. You can track twenty queries by hand for free. Citelift is not an AI Overview tracker: it measures ChatGPT.

The short list

Ranked for a store owner who wants to know one thing first: for the searches that matter, does Google show an AI Overview, and does it link my pages? Ranking is our judgement from each vendor's own pages, read on 15 October 2026. We have not bought or run these tools.

  1. SE Ranking. A dedicated AI Overviews tracker and a separate AI Mode tracker sit inside an SEO suite, with a 14-day trial and a free 5-keyword check. The best fit if you want keyword tracking and AI Overview tracking in one place.
  2. Semrush. Position Tracking marks which tracked keywords trigger an AI Overview and whether your domain is cited, and the free plan includes it for 10 keywords. AI Mode prompts need a paid AI add-on.
  3. Advanced Web Ranking. The most explicit about capture: a dedicated "Google Search + AIO" engine for citations and source URLs, down to city or ZIP code, with AI Mode as its own engine.
  4. Ahrefs Brand Radar. Keyword-based and prompt-based AI Overview indexes, plus your own prompts. Paid Ahrefs plans already include a few daily prompts, and the free AI Overviews Tracker gives a preview.
  5. Otterly.AI. The cheapest monthly-billed prompt tracker here with AI Overviews on every plan. AI Mode is a paid add-on.
  6. ZipTie. Priced by usage, with AI Overviews included in the free trial.
  7. Nightwatch. A rank tracker with an "AI Snippet Rank" column for the top three places in the AI Overview.
  8. Peec AI, 9. LLMrefs and 10. Rankscale. Prompt trackers that list both AI Overviews and AI Mode among many assistants; worth it if Google is one surface of several you care about.

AI Overview trackers compared

There are two kinds of tool here. Rank trackers run your keywords as Google searches and note whether an AI Overview appeared and who it linked. Prompt trackers ask longer questions, closer to how people type into AI Mode, and count brand mentions and cited pages. Prices are exactly as each vendor's page showed them, checked 15 October 2026.

Tool How it tracks AI Overviews AI Mode Entry price as shown Free plan or trial Source
SE Ranking Keywords and prompts Whether a keyword triggers an overview, where your site sits among its sources, and the other sites featured Yes, a separate AI Mode tracker Core $129/month ($103.20/month billed annually): 2,000 keywords and 100 prompts tracked daily 14-day trial, no card needed; free AI Overviews check of 5 keywords SE Ranking AI Overviews tracker; plans
Semrush Keywords (Position Tracking); prompts with the AI add-on Keywords that trigger an overview and whether your domain is cited; a citation is recorded as position 1 Prompt Tracking in AI Mode with the AI Visibility Toolkit ($99/month) or Semrush One SEO plan $139/month ($117.33/month billed annually) Free plan tracks 10 keywords, AI Overviews included; 7-day trial; no trial on the AI Visibility Toolkit Semrush AI visibility features; Position Tracking; prices
Advanced Web Ranking Keywords A "Google Search + AIO" engine for citations and source URLs; country, region, city or ZIP; uses two keyword units per keyword Yes, as its own engine Pro $139/month 7-day trial; 30-day money-back guarantee AWR AI visibility tracking; AIO engine; pricing
Ahrefs Brand Radar Keyword and prompt indexes, plus your own prompts Mentions and citations in a keyword-based and a prompt-based index Yes Custom prompt packages from $50/month; paid Ahrefs plans include 5 to 20 daily prompts (Lite $129/month) Free AI Overviews Tracker, no signup, limited preview; Brand Radar trial not stated Brand Radar; pricing; free tracker
Otterly.AI Prompts you set, checked daily Included on every plan, with link citations Add-on, $9/month on Lite Lite $29/month for 15 prompts Free trial, length not stated Otterly.AI pricing
ZipTie Prompts, priced by usage Yes, and Bing's AI Overview Yes, on paid plans Starter from $42.75/month, estimated by its price calculator 7-day trial with 25 daily prompts on three engines including AI Overviews, no card needed ZipTie pricing
Nightwatch Keywords, plus AI prompts "AI Snippet Rank" for the top three places in the overview, and competitors' presence Yes, listed on every plan Starter €79/month billed yearly (€948 a year), shown to us in euros 14-day trial Nightwatch pricing; AI Overview help
Peec AI Prompts, checked daily One of the models you choose (three on Starter) Same Starter $95/month for 50 prompts "Start free trial" button, length not stated Peec AI pricing
LLMrefs Imports your keywords and writes the prompts Yes Yes All in One $79/month for 500 prompts, labelled "Limited time only", weekly reports Free account, limits not stated; 7-day trial LLMrefs pricing
Rankscale Prompts, paid in credits Yes Yes Essentials $17/month, yearly only; Pro $99/month 7-day Pro trial Rankscale pricing; Rankscale

Three notes on reading the table. Ahrefs' Brand Radar page showed us prices in pounds, so the dollar figures come from its pricing page. Nightwatch showed only euros. Semrush's free-plan AI Overview tracking and Position Tracking limits come from its knowledge base, not the prices page.

Also checked and left out of the ten: Surfer's AI Search Analytics plan tracks AI Overviews and AI Mode for $82/month billed yearly, and Writesonic's Starter tracks Google AI Overviews for $79/month billed annually. Both are content suites first; the AEO tools guide covers them. AccuRanker's help pages describe an AI Overview report for tracked keywords, but its pricing page ($224/month for Professional) did not mention AI Overviews when we read it.

How to check AI Overview presence manually for free

A tracker automates a method you can run yourself. For 10 to 20 queries a week, doing it by hand is manageable, and it shows you what the overview actually said.

  1. Choose the queries. Start with searches where your pages already earn impressions in Search Console, then add the buyer questions you most want to answer. Write the list down and keep it fixed.
  2. Open a private window, signed out. Google personalises results, and a signed-in session can show you something a shopper would not see.
  3. Fix the location and device. Search from the country you sell in, on the same device class each week. If you sell in several countries, keep a separate series for each. Write the conditions at the top of the sheet.
  4. Run each query and expand the overview. Open the full source list before you record anything.
  5. Record three things. Did an AI Overview appear? Is your domain among its links, and which URL? Which other domains were linked?
  6. Keep "no overview" and "did not load" apart. Google says AI Overviews show only when its systems decide they add something, and "often don't trigger". A missing overview is a valid result; a page that failed to load is not.
  7. Repeat on the same weekday. Read the trend over several weeks, not one absence.
  8. Check Search Console beside it. Google counts AI Overview and AI Mode appearances in the Performance report under the Web search type, inside your normal totals rather than as a type of their own (Google Search Central, AI features and your website, read 15 October 2026). So Search Console tells you how the page performed in Search overall; your sheet tells you what the overview showed.

Copy this record table into a sheet. The row below is fictional and shows the format only.

The blank AI visibility capture sheet has the same fields and room for AI Mode rows. The Google AI Overviews guide for Shopify explains how a page becomes eligible in the first place and what Google's separate generative AI report does and does not show.

Tracking AI Mode

AI Mode is a different surface from AI Overviews. Google says the two can use different models and techniques, so the answers and links they show will vary. Track them as two series, never as one "Google AI" number.

AI Mode is conversational, so trackers treat it more like a chatbot than a results page. Semrush, for example, counts the AI Mode response as position 1 and its citations as positions 2, 3 and onwards. Follow-up questions change the answer, so record only the first question in a manual check unless each follow-up gets its own row.

Check how a tool sells AI Mode before you buy. On 15 October 2026, Otterly.AI sold it as an add-on, Semrush needed the AI Visibility Toolkit or Semrush One for AI Mode prompts, ZipTie included it only on paid plans, and Advanced Web Ranking ran it as a separate engine. In Search Console, AI Mode traffic sits in the same Web totals as everything else.

What AI Overview trackers cannot tell you

  • What every shopper saw. A tracker runs your list from its own location, device and signed-out session. Results differ by person, place and time, so the tracker shows a sample under its method.
  • Whether an absence is real. Overviews change often. Ahrefs' own research, quoted on its tracker page, puts the chance of an AI Overview changing between observations at 70%. One missed week is one observation.
  • Results for places it does not check. Check whether the tool tracks your country and city. Advanced Web Ranking's AIO engine, for example, started in a fixed list of countries and added more later.
  • Clicks or sales. A link in an overview is not a visit, and a visit is not an order. Keep impressions, clicks and orders as separate evidence; the AI visibility measurement guide shows how.
  • Why you were or were not linked. A tracker records the outcome. Google decides which pages to link, and no tool can promise a citation.

How to choose an AI Overview tracker

Start with the job you already do. If you track keyword rankings, pick a rank tracker that adds AI Overviews to the same report: SE Ranking, Semrush, Advanced Web Ranking or Nightwatch. If you care more about longer questions and several assistants, pick a prompt tracker: Otterly.AI, Ahrefs Brand Radar, ZipTie, Peec AI, LLMrefs or Rankscale.

Then ask four questions on a trial:

  1. Which location, device and session does it use? You want the country you sell in, ideally the city, and a signed-out session.
  2. Does it keep the overview text and every linked URL? A yes or no without the source list cannot show who was linked instead of you.
  3. How often does it repeat each query? Daily data smooths volatility; weekly is enough for most stores.
  4. What does the unit cost? Keywords, prompts, checks and credits run out at different speeds, and Advanced Web Ranking charges two units per keyword for its AIO engine.

If you only have 20 queries, the free manual method and a one-off check from Ahrefs or SE Ranking may be all you need. The AI visibility tools guide has a fuller buying checklist, and the LLM SEO tools guide covers trackers for ChatGPT and other assistants. For the terms, see AI visibility.

Where Citelift fits

Citelift is not an AI Overview tracker and does not check Google. It measures whether ChatGPT names your store, and it plans, writes and publishes product-linked articles from your catalogue to your Shopify blog, or to WooCommerce through its WordPress plugin. If ChatGPT answers are the question rather than Google, the free ChatGPT check needs no sign-in. For Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, use one of the trackers above or the manual method.

Questions.

What is an AI Overview tracker?

A tool that runs a fixed list of Google searches on a schedule, from a set location and device, and records whether an AI Overview appeared, whether your domain was one of its linked sources, and which other sites were linked. Rank trackers add this to keyword tracking; prompt trackers ask longer questions and count mentions and citations.

Can I track AI Overviews for free?

Yes, for a small query list. Run 10 to 20 searches once a week in a private window with the same location and device, and record whether an overview appeared and which domains it linked. Ahrefs' free AI Overviews Tracker and SE Ranking's free check (5 keywords) give a one-off preview. Semrush's free plan includes Position Tracking for 10 keywords, AI Overviews included.

Does Google Search Console show AI Overview traffic?

Inside your normal totals. Google says sites appearing in AI Overviews and AI Mode are counted in the Performance report under the Web search type. They are not split out as a search type of their own there, so Search Console alone cannot tell you which query showed an overview with your link.

Do AI Overview trackers also track AI Mode?

All ten list AI Mode somewhere, but often as a separate engine, an add-on or a paid-plan extra. Otterly.AI sells AI Mode as an add-on, Semrush tracks AI Mode prompts with its AI Visibility Toolkit or Semrush One, and ZipTie includes it only on paid plans. Read the plan page for the surface you need.

Does Citelift track Google AI Overviews?

No. Citelift measures whether ChatGPT names your store, and it plans, writes and publishes product-linked articles to your Shopify blog or WooCommerce site. It does not check Google AI Overviews or AI Mode. Use one of the trackers here, or the free manual method, for Google.
